President since 2013
Rick Commons became President of Harvard-Westlake in 2013 after ten years as Headmaster of Groton School; he began his career as a Harvard-Westlake English teacher, coach, and college counselor.
Curriculum & special classes
College-preparatory program spanning grades 7-12 across the middle school and upper school campuses. Students take five academic classes per semester. Core requirements: six years of English; five years of history and social studies (through 11th); five years of math (six recommended); five years of lab science; world languages through level III (or two languages through level II). Arts required in grades 7-9 plus an additional year in grades 10-12; PE/interscholastic sports in grades 7-12. Community service is required every year (16 hours, plus CPR/AED/first-aid in the upper school). Honors caps: three courses for sophomores, five for juniors and seniors. Departments include English, History & Social Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies & Independent Research (Kutler Center), Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Science, and World Languages (classical and modern).
Financial aid
About 20% of students receive need-based financial aid. All grants include books and course-related materials, required athletic team clothing and equipment, school-related trips, and a bookstore/cafeteria account. Students on aid may also apply for funds covering academic study travel and leadership programs. All aid is need-based and determined by family income and assets compared to the full cost of attending.

Admissions
Entry grades are 7 and 9; openings in grades 8, 10, and 11 occasionally become available on a limited basis. Admission tours and events begin in September (no spring or summer tours). Questions: admission@hw.com.
